The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena is undoubtedly the most fascinating place in Arequipa. The 20000 square meters complex is actually a convent was built in 1580 and enlarged in the 17th century. The monastery is surrounded by imposing high walls and about 450 people once lived there. It has been beautifully restored and provides wonderful retreat from busy streets of Arequipa. Delicate pastel colours of the buildings are attractively contrasted with bright flowers and other artifacts and the complex is a paradise for photographers. |
