MT. COOK AREA

Area in the vicinity of Mt. Cook (3755 m) - the highest mountain in New Zeland and Australasia belongs to one of the most spectacular in the whole country. The 50 km drive from Lake Pukaki to Mt. Cook village is just unbelievable. The road is sometimes blocked by herds of sheep which can put cars into stand still for several minutes. There are several interesting walks from the village. I went for a three hours hike Hooker Valley but another good trail takes to the terminal lake of Tasman Glacier - the longest in New Zealand and apparently also in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica.
