The night at 5100 metres was the coldest so far and the mercury fell well below minus 20 degrees Celsius. Water brought from the nearest creek froze in a couple of minutes. However, low temperatures usually mean beautiful sunny weather and we were not disappointed. This time there was no shade and early sunshine quickly brought long expected relieve to our frozen bones and wet clothes.

We broke camp and began long ascent along a snowy slope leading to the Dhampus Pass at 5200. The pass is few hundred metres wide and was even used as a landing place for a small Pillatus Porter plane called „Yeti” used by the victorious Dhaulagiri expedition in 1960. It eventually crashed and its wreck rusts somewhere below the pass. Unfortunately we could not find it. It was probably buried under unprecedented amount of snow that fell this autumn. Deb, our guide sad hat he had never seen so much snow on this trek.

We hardly managed to descend below a snow line and pitch a tent on the grassy pastures of Yak Kharka (3960 m).
